Applied Thermal Control’s Technical Manager, Mitchell Howard travelled from the UK via Frankfurt to Shanghai and onto the Suzhou region of China. The purpose of the visit was to offer chiller technical support to our local agent Booming Technology Ltd and the end users at Soochow University.
China experienced very high ambient conditions in July and August with daily highs exceeding 40°C. The K12 recirculating chiller was supplied by Applied Thermal Control to a UK-based original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and the end user was the Centre for Molecular Imaging and Nuclear Medicine, Soochow University (China). The K12 chiller, with its 14kW of cooling capacity, is used to cool a helium compressor. The device is used within the university to assist medical research through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to capture high resolution images of the brain. The K12 chiller is located outside and had been exposed to extremely high ambient temperatures. ATC responded to these issues quickly, liaising with all parties and arranging travel to site in order to aid our international customer.
Mitchell visited the customer and worked in collaboration with the OEM installation engineers to resolve the issue, retrofitting the unit to enable it to manage these demanding temperatures throughout the year. A follow up visit was made to site to monitor and ensure the smooth operation of the equipment. Final tweaks were made to the running of the chiller to make provision for the worst possible temperature conditions in partnership with the end user and local agent.
ATC will learn from this experience in future design and developments to ensure high ambient conditions do not affect the performance of the chillers.
